Business travel basics
Listen to the introduction to the topic and then move on to the tasks.
This part of the lesson focuses mostly on the vocabulary that is related to its topic, which is travel and, more specifically, business trips. In this part you will familiarise yourself with some basic words that describe travel. Before you move on, check what it means to really know a word.
Knowing a word means:
- understanding its basic meaning but being aware that words may have many meanings (think of the word “book”)
- understanding the grammatical form of the word (e.g. noun or verb?)
- knowing how to decode the word when it is heard or read, and how to pronounce and spell it when it is used.
So, if you are not sure of the meaning(s), you have not heard the word before and you don’t know how to pronounce it, plus you have no idea what part of speech it is, please, check it in a dictionary. While doing it read the example sentences that are given there to see how the word can be used in different contexts.
Start with the presentation below. Watch the video that is included and then do the set of exercises to check how many words/expressions about travel you remember. Feel free to watch the video and repeat the phrases as many times as you want to.
Now, think about your travel experiences and answer the questions below.
- When was the last time you booked a flight?
- Have you ever flown business class? If not, would you like to?
- Have you ever hired a car? How expensive was it?
- Which option is better for you: half board or full board?
- What hotel facilities you can’t do without?
Have a look at the flashcards below. There is a definition given on each flashcard. Read the definitions and check if you know the words that are defined. The following quiz will help you revise this vocabulary, so after you finish working with the flashcards, focus on the quiz.
Vocabulary quiz:
Download the file below. The exercise you will find there will help you recognize different expressions you can hear while travelling by train or ferry. Again, after you complete this exercise you will be able to repeat this material with the following task.
Below you have another vocabulary exercise. First do the matching to create full words/expressions and then check if you know what they mean exactly. So, after you complete this task, move on to the cards below.
Now, download the file below. It contains one exercise that will show you how to use the words you practised above in full sentences.
To summarise the material from this part of Business Trips, please do the quiz. Additionally, pick 7 words from this part that turned out to be completely new for you and create your own sentences with them.
